and the lord said, buy some crap.

Feria Urbana (Urban Fair) | consumption central | 12/14/06 - 12/17/06
had to create a new category for this activity! i'm a reluctant shopper, or a closeted shopper, perhaps. i don't like to talk about shopping or think about how often i do it. but once in awhile, buying crap is worth talking about. mightygoods.com is one site i'll pass along gladly; crafty fairs where crafty people get their work out in the world is another thing i'll happily pitch. this one takes place at the Canvas Gallery, my favorite place to have a glass of wine with a friend's mom, and now, my favorite place to examine other people's work and think about how i could make that (even though i rarely do). plus, christmas is coming, and there's no way i'm going to get the ninety-four knitting projects i have in the hopper in time for that holiday. so i guess i might have to actually buy things for people. dammit.

black like her black beautiful heart

anne lamott at city arts | artyarts | 03/26/07
anne lamott has been my hero ever since i read "operating instructions: a journal of my son's first year," where she admits to wanting, at times, to kill her cat, and her young son. i was a high schooler when i read it, and believed that it took some courage to admit that your own kin could drive you that crazy. now, in the heyday of david sedaris, it may not be such an amazing thing anymore, but i still think anne is tops. she's an honest, gutsy writer who often put some of my greatest fears into words (namely, the fear of first drafts, in "Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life"). she's speaking at the herbst theatre on march 26, 2006. get your tickets now ($19 apiece).
